Samos rewards a car: the island is about 65 km end to end, with two UNESCO sites near Pythagorio — the Eupalinos Tunnel and the Heraion of Hera — plus mountain villages such as Manolates and Vourliotes and the Samos Wine Museum. Roads are mostly paved with limits up to 90 km/h, fuel from around €1.70 per litre, and free parking outside the towns; hazards include narrow village lanes, hairpin bends and the occasional gravel track where insurance may not apply. The main sights link into one- or two-day driving loops taking in Pythagorio, Kokkari and Karlovasi, and there is even a half-day foot-ferry hop to Kuşadası in Turkey — the rental car stays parked on Samos.
